We arrived in Olbia in the middle of a rain storm...actually the first rain we have had on our trip. Imagine arriving at a strange airport.....and trying to find the bus into the center of town and to the home of our host family. We sort of knew where we were going.Thank goodness for our ipad and Google maps...we thought. This time though, our Google maps app was way off. In fact, we ended up on the right road but not on the right side of the harbor. After walking back and forth, dragging our suitcases and becoming more and more frustrated, we asked an older man for help. He indicated that the number we were looking for was on the other side of the harbor. So off we went around the corner and across the bridge. Lo and behold, the kind gentleman had hopped on his bike and was following us....just to make sure we arrived safely at the right address. And we were again reminded that there are wonderfully kind people all over the world. Our host family welcomed us into their lovely and comfortable home overlooking the harbor. Turns out that Francesco is also a retired elementary school teacher and now teaches sailing to children and adults. His wife, Rosella was a technical assistant at another school. Their son is at the area university. After getting settled, we set off to explore the center of Olbia. Meanwhile it was raining "cats and dogs" so we were very happy that we had packed rain gear and umbrellas. It was a dark and stormy night but we managed to find a great little trattoria for some delicious seafood.
Today was our first day of school! We both had the stomach jitters......you all know those feelings.... a test and some sort of performance was expected. Dominica welcomed us and made us feel right at home. She is the perfect teacher, gentle and kind but pushing us a little bit as well. Tonight we have a bit of homework. And we have learned many new words, and expressions as well as a few important verb declentions. At the end of our morning this is how we felt......nostra cervelli fritti! hint... cervello means brain. Here are a few photos of Olbia. It is the major port city in northern Sardenia and has a lovely center.
